ICYMI: North Carolina Appeals Court Deems “Skill” Games Illegal

ICYMI — A North Carolina appeals court found predatory “skill” games to be illegal in a 2-1 decision last week, noting that the devices are games of chance, with no element of “skill” in the play.

From the judges: “Giving players the option to complete an impossible task to receive an advantage in a game is effectively the same as having no dexterity element, because no amount of skill will make a difference in the outcome of the game.”

The court’s distinctive action against these games marks a strong commitment to protecting North Carolina’s residents from deceptive street-corner gambling.

So-called skill games are predatory, unregulated, untaxed slot machines that rob the pockets of hardworking residents, attract crime, and taunt underaged and problem gamblers. North Carolina has said NO to convenience store gambling, Virginia should too.
