ICYMI: Florida Officials Done ‘Playing Games’ When It Comes to Neighborhood Slot Machines

In case you missed it, a recent neighborhood slot machine bust in St. Petersburg, Florida led to the seizure of more than 160 machines and nearly $250,000 in cash.

The crackdown comes amid a busy summer for the Florida Gaming Control Commission, which has carried out three similar operations in the past four months – recovering more than 500 machines and nearly $400,000 in cash.

What’s more? Florida gaming officials confirmed what we already know: these illegal machines give players virtually no chance of winning and zero meaningful protections or recourse. As Florida state Representative Berny Jacques, who was involved in the ride-along, put it:

“Because they are illegal, the state has no oversight. So you don’t know what you’re getting. You’re literally throwing your money away.”

Virginia has banned these dangerous machines – and for good reason. They prey on vulnerable communities, attract illegal activity, and offer no safeguards for problem gamblers or children. Florida is done “playing games” when it comes to illegal slot machines. Virginia should be, too. It’s time to enforce our ban on “skill” games.
