Paid for by Virginians Against Neighborhood Slot Machines
Illegal Gambling Affects Everyone – Even Those You Least Expect
Florida law enforcement is cracking down on illegal gambling operations that impacting their communities’ most vulnerable.
Over the summer, Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) officials took down an illegal gambling den at a local senior center in Sumter, Florida, seizing nearly 200 illegal slot machines. Here’s what local law enforcement had to say about the illicit operation:
“This was a lucrative and highly illegal operation that targeted some of the most vulnerable members of our community – our seniors. Illegal gambling houses are not harmless entertainment. They open the door to exploitation, financial crimes, and other serious criminal activity.” – State Attorney Bill Gladson
“They don’t pay taxes, and they prey on people who are unaware of their very real dangers.” – Seminole Gaming COO David Hoeneymeyer
“If you have a payout opportunity [that low], it’s theft. They’re stealing your money under the guise of the flashy lights and funny sounds.” – FGCC Law Enforcement Director Carl Herlod
The operators of this illegal gambling ring were allegedly luring the elderly in with free food and drinks, then raking in more than $24 million as a result.
Just like in Virginia, illegal neighborhood gambling preys on those who may not know better and have the most to lose. Virginia law enforcement should take note from Florida, who just recently busted another 62 illegal machines, and work diligently to stop predatory convenience store gambling.
